What Is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance helps pay some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover.

How Medigap Works with Original Medicare

Medicare Supplement insurance works alongside your Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) coverage. While Medicare pays its share of your covered healthcare costs, Medigap helps pay some of the remaining costs, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

With Medicare Supplement coverage, you can see any doctor or provider who accepts Medicare - there's no network restrictions. This gives you the freedom to choose your healthcare providers without worrying about whether they're in-network.

Important Enrollment Window

The best time to buy a Medicare Supplement plan is during your Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month period begins on the first day of the month you're both 65 or older AND enrolled in Medicare Part B.

During Open Enrollment, insurance companies can't deny you coverage or charge you more due to pre-existing conditions.

After this period, you may not be able to buy a Medigap policy, or it may cost more due to your health status.
